چکیده

Abstract Biodiversity is fundamental for ecosystem functioning, sustainable crop production, soil health, and attainment of food nutrition security. Loss biodiversity in Africa across the globe, its negative impacts on security, climate, health must be curbed. African indigenous underutilized crops are not likely to cause diet-related diseases. In addition, some them cannot adversely affected by climate change, they also require minimum agronomic input yield optimally. Besides supplying appropriate proportions essential minerals, horticultural can reduce hunger alleviate poverty. While abiotic stresses like low/high temperature, drought, light intensity, sub-optimal relative humidity will have exotic plants growth development, seldom affected. It great importance that neglected plant species (NUS) serve a dual purpose as man well animal feed. Despite these crucial roles NUS play, still threatened with neglect potentials maximized. This paper discusses strategies adopted conserve their optimum utilization, Nigerian rain forest prototypes. Deliberate identification cultivation NUS, establishment gene field banks, recognition promotion through national special research development programmes, use media, including social, extension agents agencies, linking relevant industries food, feed, pharmaceuticals, conservation diversified farming systems etc. major key Climate-smart agriculture.

Agricultural Biodiversity in Southern Brazil: Integrating Efforts for Conservation and Use of Neglected and Underutilized Species

Brazil is one of the most biodiversity rich countries in the world, including a wealth of agricultural biodiversity in both wild and cultivated forms. This is particularly noticeable in southern Brazil, home to a wide array of underutilized food species whose genetic diversity is maintained mostly by farmers through on-farm management practices. Farmers’ contribution in safeguarding and keeping...

Conservation and Use of Genetic Resources of Underutilized Crops in the Americas—A Continental Analysis

Latin America is home to dramatically diverse agroecological regions which harbor a high concentration of underutilized plant species, whose genetic resources hold the potential to address challenges such as sustainable agricultural development, food security and sovereignty, and climate change. This paper examines the status of an expert-informed list of underutilized crops in Latin America an...

Developing a Roadmap for Improving Neglected and Underutilized Crops: A Case Study of South Africa

Reports of neglected and underutilized crops' (NUS) potential remain mostly anecdotal with limited and often incoherent research available to support them. This has been attributed to lack of clear research goals, limited funding directed at NUS and journal apathy toward publishing work on NUS. The latter points also explain the lack of interest from emerging and established researchers. Additi...

Selenium Enrichment of Horticultural Crops.

The ability of some crops to accumulate selenium (Se) is crucial for human nutrition and health. Selenium has been identified as a cofactor of the enzyme glutathione peroxidase, which is a catalyzer in the reduction of peroxides that can damage cells and tissues, and can act as an antioxidant. Plants are the first link in the food chain, which ends with humans. Increasing the Se quantity in pla...

Neglected wild life: Parasitic biodiversity as a conservation target☆

Parasites appropriate host resources to feed and/or to reproduce, and lower host fitness to varying degrees. As a consequence, they can negatively impact human and animal health, food production, economic trade, and biodiversity conservation. They can also be difficult to study and have historically been regarded as having little influence on ecosystem organization and function. Not surprisingl...
